ABOUT DENIS WARREN-TANGNEY Denis Warren-Tangney commenced his articles of clerkship in 1990, and since then has held numerous positions in commerce, predominantly in the non-banking financial services sector and more specifically in the insurance field enabling him with more than 25 years of experience. Since 2011, he has been practicing as an attorney. His interests in the legal profession are varied, and include the development of the Profession, training and education, and the “new kid on the block”: blockchain as it relates to the financial services sector. He has the right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa as well as the lower Courts. Denis is a member of the International Bar Association, as well as the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association. FIRM PROFILE Warren-Tangney Attorneys Incorporated is a boutique law firm, owned and operated by Denis Warren-Tangney, as assisted by Calvin Viljoen (who are both, in terms of the applicable law, registered with the Law Society of South Africa as practising attorneys). Maxine de Villers is our current Candidate Attorney. We are assisted by various associates in our practice, who deal with litigation, intellectual property, and conveyancing. Although under a new name, the practice’s roots can be traced back to 1990, when Denis commenced his articles of Clerkship under the late Rene de Beer at Israelsohn von Zwiklitz attorneys. The firm specialises in non-banking financial services and has a keen interest in the development of blockchain-based legal mechanisms, including the potential of making use thereof, by means of “smart contracts” for such issues as property transfer registration, and education on a professional level. In relation to the latter, we are a part of the Intergovernmental Fintech Working Group under the auspices of the South African Reserve Bank, which allows for input into development of Fintech start-ups, as well as proposed legislation relating to the impact of blockchain technology. Over the past 2 years, the firm’s growth has been phenomenal, as demonstrated by the revenue growth of more than 100%.
